 Welcome to the Clubhouse Kindergarten!

We are delighted you have your child with us and we want to assure you that your child will have the best possible care along with a good foundation in education.  Our Kindergarten teacher, Miss Shawna, has her degree in Early Childhood Education.  Miss Shawna loves teaching math and science, which, she easily incorporates into our language arts program.  Miss Shawna uses a “hands on” approach to learning.  She joined the Clubhouse in 1993.

Our Kindergarten program is a full day program.  Ou school opens at 630.  By 9:00 most of our classmates have arrived and we are ready to start our day with a morning snack.  We use this time to work on our serving skills, self-help and communication skills, and, of course, our table manners.  Miss Shawna enjoys this opportunity to develop our language and social skills.  We share bits 'n pieces about ourselves, our families and friends, and anything eventful that happened recently.  We discuss the activities that are planned for the day.

We are all responsible for taking care of our classroom so Miss Shawna assigns each of us a daily job at circle time.  We discuss the calendar in English, Spanish and Sign Language to include the days, weeks, months, numbers and special events, etc.  We become "weather watchers" and keep track of seasonal changes.  Circle time is full of lots of information!  Afterward, we continue to focus on learning at the table as a group.  This is the time when we gather the skills we have learned through "hands on" experiences and put them down on paper.  We encompass our reading, math and writing skills.  The blocks that we have been "playing" with as we counted and sorted them are now transformed into numbers and addition.

When our "work" is done, Miss Shawna lets us choose areas to play in.  These areas consist of Housekeeping, Blocks, Art, Manipulatives, Computer and an Open Area.  Areas such as these offer a variety of experiences which we will be glad to go into detail should you decide to come in a visit our school.  We gather at the table again after free play to work on another project together.

Miss Shawna plans our activities very carefully.  When we choose the area in which we wish to play - we learn to make decisions.  When we role-play with our peers - we must first make rules and then we must work within those rules.  When the rules no longer work for us, we try to work together to change them.  Miss Shawna also uses this time for music, creative movement and special games that make school fun!  Miss Shawna helps us to learn how to handle conflicts and solve problems in appropriate ways - and you thought all we did was play!

Miss Shawna will provide you with a daily "Report Card".  It will tell you how much I ate for snack and lunch, whether or not I napped, my general disposition for the day, as well as a favorite activity.  She does this so you and I have a “conversation starter” for the way home.  Five year olds do not always know where to start when asked, "What did you do today?"  and will usually answer with a "Nothing".  The Report Card will give you information so you may ask specific questions about my day/activity.

Our goal is to work closely with you to provide the best care for you and your child.
